Recently, the team at Smollen The Builder Inc. had the pleasure of returning to Palm Springs to capture the architectural magic of Class-M, a modernist gem we proudly built for our dear friend and collaborator, Curt Cline of Modern House Architects. This wasn't just another photoshoot; it was a reunion of creativity, camaraderie, and passion for design, documented through the lens of esteemed architectural photographer Farshid Assassi.
Farshid Assassi, whose extensive portfolio includes stunning captures of some of the most prestigious architectural projects across California and beyond, has long been the visual storyteller for Curt’s visionary creations. His work, frequently featured in publications like Architectural Digest, Dwell, and Interior Design Magazine, beautifully articulates the dialogue between light, structure, and landscape—qualities that make him an ideal partner to showcase Class-M.
Our days started well before sunrise, with Farshid meticulously arranging shots as the desert sky transitioned through breathtaking shades of purple and gold. Class-M, nestled in the historic Racquet Club neighborhood, seemed to awaken gracefully under Farshid’s expert direction, its sleek lines and glass walls harmonizing effortlessly with the shifting desert light.
Adding timeless elegance to the shoot was model Jaimie, whose Audrey Hepburn-like grace, complete with a playful hula hoop, brought life and dynamism to the images. The scene felt reminiscent of the iconic mid-century photographs by Julius Shulman, whose legendary work continues to inspire modern architectural photography. Indeed, Farshid's careful and deliberate style echoes Shulman’s legacy, capturing Class-M not merely as a structure, but as a living artwork.
Between frames, our team enjoyed the rich conversation that always characterizes our collaborations. Meals and breaks were filled with passionate discussions on architecture, art, local history, and cuisine—a reflection of the shared passions that bond us as a team. It's these moments, just as much as the stunning visuals captured, that make projects like Class-M especially meaningful.
By the time the sun dipped behind the San Jacinto Mountains each evening, we were exhausted but deeply satisfied. Farshid’s photographic vision, combined with Curt’s architectural brilliance and our meticulous craftsmanship at Smollen The Builder, resulted in a set of images that beautifully encapsulate the spirit of Class-M and the essence of Palm Springs modernism.
Stay tuned—we’re excited to share more of Farshid’s breathtaking photography soon. Until then, here’s to creativity, friendship, and the enduring allure of desert modernism.
